Chronometers is an excellent collection of home and studio demos from the band's earliest period, when they were a quintet (Dave Newhouse-piano, organ, woodwinds, Tom Scott-woodwinds, Billy Swann-bass, Stuart Abramowitz-drums and Mike Zentner-guitar and violin). These 1975/76 recordings feature the band at their most Canterburian and especially at their most Hatfield-like. This is the band as I knew them when I first met them and these tapes - very carefully worked on to make them sound quite good from their very primitive genesis - is a loving tribute to a great band in their formative years, when they had more cats than fans....

Mary Halvorson is a genius composer and guitarist who has developed her own musical language, and with Code Girl she has incorporated poetry into that language. Incredible compositions and lyricism (each track is a different kind of poem). Halvorson's playing is as great as usual, and all the other members of the band sound great. Robert Wyatt's singing in particular works extremely well in the tracks he's featured. Highly, highly recommend. rat

I feel like the COVID pandemic allowed/forced Dave to really think through and seriously polish his ideas. The songs here all feel so complete, sophisticated, and fully realized--moreso than the previous Manna / Mirage releases. While I've been loving these releases since 2015s Blue Dogs, this is the one I will be listening to the most ten years down the road. GREAT collaborations from all guests and great compositions/ideas from the playful brain of Dave Newhouse. Well done! wafiii
