Giles Far weirder (and better) than I thought possible! Closest comparison I can think of is Behold the Arctopus, not even in being an insanely technical trio but in seeming to synthesise influences so far from what is 'normal' and creating something totally unheard of Favorite track: Where We Left Off.

If they come to your town, you must see them; there is no one - and I mean no one - who can match them at what they do. Even in the Midst... is their fourth album and the years together playing hundreds and hundreds of shows have created one of the most amazingly tight ensembles that you will ever hear or see.

This album widens their sound a little bit; there's plenty of the insane, over-the-top playing that we've come to expect, but there's more room for improvisation here and also for more quiet moments as well. With this album, both in terms of the sonics of the album and the performance itself, the band have made their best recorded statement yet.

Mary Halvorson is a genius composer and guitarist who has developed her own musical language, and with Code Girl she has incorporated poetry into that language. Incredible compositions and lyricism (each track is a different kind of poem). Halvorson's playing is as great as usual, and all the other members of the band sound great. Robert Wyatt's singing in particular works extremely well in the tracks he's featured. Highly, highly recommend. rat
